The connection to a caring adult has been uncovered in countless research studies to be the key component to engendering a safe space. In order to build trust, agency, and voice it is paramount to have caring adults who are willing to cede some control to the young people and manage relationships with the students. In addition, staff who have high social-emotional competence and especially those from the community who the students find relatable as they share a common background and experiences serve as positive role models for the students and thus they are someone the students can trust and go to for a multitude of needs.
