About WHEDco’s Education and Youth Development Programs

WHEDco fosters high academic achievement for more than 1,200 school-aged children each year through its Education and Youth Development Programs, which include: three After School and Extended Day Enrichment Programs embedded in public elementary and middle schools (including the South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School, which WHEDco co-founded); Summer Camps; a Middle to High School Transition Program; a Peer-led Sexuality and Reproductive Health Education Program; an LGBTQ+ & Allies Group; College Access, including tutoring, SAT prep and internship opportunities; and wrap-around Family Support & Counseling Services provided by WHEDco’s team of Licensed Social Workers. These initiatives empower students to think critically, make smart choices about their education and careers, and contribute responsibly as leaders in their communities. In an area of NYC where only 15% of adults hold college degrees, WHEDco is proud that 100% of graduating seniors in their Teen Program enroll in college each year, many of whom are the first in their families to pursue higher education.

WHEDco’s After-School Program at PS/IS 218 serves over 450 students in grades K-8. The program focuses on ELA and STEM project-based learning activities, arts enrichment programming, including visual arts, dance and drama classes, chess club, and physical fitness activities.

“Gardening helps me because I like learning about the plants and I get to get the hands-on experience which is really fun. Getting to use the materials and tools is very interesting to me. It’s something that I’ve never done before that has turned into something I love and something so interesting.

It’s magical in a way.
